FIELD GUIDE RECOMMENDATIONS

For authoritative assistance in species identification, nothing beats a good field guide!  Here are a few of my favorites:

General Fauna
Illustrated Guide to Common Animals of the East Bay Hills. Illustrated by Dana Gardner. Plastic laminated
folding sheet, produced by the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, Spring 2011. Remarkably good pictures of
most of the bird, butterfly, reptile, amphibian, and mammal species we are likely to see in Claremont
Canyon. Purchase from Botanical Garden shop.

Birds
Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 6th Edition. Washington, D.C.: National Geographic Society, 2011.
The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America, by David Allen Sibley. New York: Knopf, 2003.
Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America, by Roger Tory Peterson, Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2008.
Smithsonian Field Guide to the Birds of North America, by Ted Floyd. New York: Harper Collins, 2008.
Mammals
Mammals of North America, by Roland W. Kays. Princeton: Princeton Univ. Press, 2002. (Princeton Field             Guides).

Butterflies

Annotated Checklist of the East Bay Flora, compiled by Barbara Ertter. California Native Plant Society, East
Bay Chapter, Special Publication #3, 1997. [Not actually a field guide; but useful in determining possible
        local species.]
Plants of the East Bay Parks, by Glenn Keator, Roberts Rinehart Publisher, 1994. [Probably out-of-print; but
        worth looking for.]
Mushrooms - recommended by Debbie Viess, Bay Area Mycological Society
